Before We Begin
Before you start the upgrade process, it’s important to make sure your iPad meets the minimum requirements for iOS 15. The latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system requires an iPad Pro (first generation or later), iPad mini 2 or later, iPad Air (first generation) or later, or iPad (fourth generation) or later.
If your iPad doesn’t meet these requirements, you won’t be able to upgrade to iOS 15.
If your iPad meets the minimum requirements, the next step is to make sure it has enough free storage space. You can check how much storage space your iPad has by going to Settings > About > Storage.
Apple recommends having at least 16GB of available storage space before upgrading to iOS 15.
Steps to Upgrade Your Old iPad to iOS 15 without Using a Computer
- Download the over-the-air update package
- Go to Settings > Software Update on your iPad.
- If an update is available, tap on it to start the upgrade process. If no update is available, you can force Apple to check for updates by going to Settings > Software Update and tapping on Check for Updates.
- Wait for the update to download
- Install the update
- Verify the Upgrade

Once you’ve started the update process, it will take some time for the over-the-air update package to download. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on your internet connection speed and the size of the update package.
During this time, make sure your iPad is fully charged. If your iPad runs out of battery during the upgrade process, you may end up with a bricked device.
After the update has downloaded, you’ll be prompted to install it. Tap on Install Now to start the installation process.
During this time, your iPad will restart several times, so make sure to be patient and let the upgrade process complete.
Once the installation process is complete, you’ll be prompted to verify that the upgrade was successful. Tap on Verify Now to start the verification process.
If the upgrade was successful, you’ll see a message saying so. If there were any issues during the upgrade process, you’ll see an error message. In this case, you may need to try upgrading again or seek help from Apple support.
